What are inbox desiccants?

This refers to desiccants in bag form that are added to the packaging unit to control the humidity in the packaging space and protect sensitive products from moisture-related damage - for example in cartons, boxes, folding boxes or shipping packaging.

Space-saving and enclosed directly with the product, inbox desiccants absorb excess moisture from the surrounding air and thus stabilise the climatic conditions inside the packaging. Their effect unfolds precisely where moisture can have the greatest impact on the quality of a product - in the immediate vicinity of the packaged goods.

The sources of moisture that can impair the quality of the goods are varied and range from residual moisture in the goods and in packaging aids to moisture in the air and moisture that penetrates through the barrier layer. The result is often damage such as mould, corrosion, clumping or detached labels. Desiccants for use inside the packaging offer a simple and effective way of minimising such risks at an early stage - both during storage and transport.

Typical areas of application include the shipping and storage of electronics, machine and metal components, pharmaceutical products, textile materials and food packaging. Inbox desiccants are suitable for both in-house material flow and international shipping - especially when climatic fluctuations, long transport times or sensitive packaging place special demands on product protection.

What advantages do inbox desiccants offer?

Inbox desiccants enable targeted regulation of humidity directly inside the packaging. Typical moisture damage can be effectively avoided by adding the product directly. The selection of the right product depends on the respective application and environmental conditions.

The classic desiccants used in shipping packaging are the well-known silica gel bags. Usually in combination with an additional barrier layer, such as an airtight PE bag, they offer proven moisture protection under controlled conditions. Just like DIN 55473 desiccant bags, which are used for export, for example, an additional envelope is the basic prerequisite for the function of these standard desiccant variants.

However, such additional casings are increasingly being dispensed with for more resource-efficient packaging design - whether for ecological reasons or due to process optimisation. At the same time, there are applications that require a higher dehumidification performance than classic silica gel solutions can provide. This is where modern high-performance desiccants for inbox applications come into play.

High-performance desiccant for inbox application

The new ThoMar high-performance desiccant BoxDryy® has a specially formulated combination of active ingredients, which enables a much higher absorption capacity compared to a standard desiccant - without an additional protective layer. BoxDryy® combines maximum performance with the requirements of sustainable packaging concepts - and thus sets new standards in the field of modern inbox desiccants. It not only offers exceptionally high protection against moisture, but also contributes to the reduction of packaging materials.

Unlike many conventional desiccants, the high-performance desiccant does not require any additional, moisture-inhibiting outer packaging. The product also works reliably in open breathing packaging such as cartons or boxes - without any plastic barrier layers or multi-layer films. In this way, the amount of material used can be significantly reduced without having to compromise on the safety of goods and merchandise.
